The Story Behind the Fragrance – A Journey to 16th-Century the Caribbean

I'm 16th century sailors discovered the leaf of Bay rum tree (Pimenta racemosa), a small tree from the Antilles, also known as Bay St. Thomas. Its dried leaves, rubbed on the body, released a very fragrant oil – an excellent way to cool down and perfume oneself after all those months on the high seas.

While planters in the Antilles produced shipments of sugar destined for Europe, some resourceful slaves on those same sugarcane plantations discovered that fermented molasses (a byproduct of sugar) could be converted into a sugary, alcoholic beverage. Thus, the brewers utilized the raw recipe of the slaves, distilled the molasses to intensify the alcohol content in the drink, and [created] the famous Rum to create.

For an imaginative sailor from the Virgin Islands, this was a great opportunity to brew the leaves and thus extract the essential oils. The Bay Rum was born. This scented water was made by the islanders with spices, citrus peels, cinnamon etc. refined.
